FDNY - Fire Department

One of the jobs of the Fire Department is inspection of buildings to insure compliance with the city’s fire safety regulations.  This includes city owned or leased buildings, including public schools.  Unfortunately, this is a toothless program, particularly in regard to public buildings, especially schools.

If a company inspects a school and finds a violation such as a “smoke stop door” improperly held open, they order it to be corrected “forthwith.”  The custodian closes the door, the fire company leaves, and the door is promptly reopened.  There is no effective disciplinary action taken against the school custodian, principal, or school security.
